Rockstar Games built Los Santos to be a playground, and the cheats let you stop playing by the rules. You can spawn a stunt plane, shrug off bullets, or launch Franklin into the sky with a few button presses.
This guide covers the cheats that work in Story Mode on Grand Theft Auto V. It explains the three ways to enter them, lists every cheat by category, and covers what to do when one fails. The codes still work in the Enhanced version on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and on the older releases.
How do you enter cheat codes in GTA 5?
You can enter a cheat in three ways: with a controller button sequence, by dialing a number on your in-game phone, or by typing a word into the PC console.
- Controller sequence (PlayStation and Xbox): Press the buttons in order during normal gameplay. This is the original method and is the only one on PS3 and Xbox 360.
- In-game phone (PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC): Open the phone with Up on the D-pad (or Up arrow on PC), dial the number, and press call. Every number starts with 1-999 and then spells the cheat’s name on the keypad.
- PC console: Press the tilde key (~), type the cheat word, and press Enter.
A short confirmation message shows when the cheat activates. Dialing the same number again usually turns the effect off.
My recommendation is to use the phone on any current platform. Misplacing one button in a ten-step sequence is easy, but the keypad method is simple to read and hard to get wrong.
What should you know before using cheats?
Cheats work only in Story Mode, and using them disables trophies and achievements.
Cheat codes don’t function in GTA Online. According to Inverse’s guide, they also switch off trophies and achievements, so keep them away from any save you’re using to chase 100% completion. The simplest approach is to keep a separate save for experiments.
What are the best GTA 5 cheats for health and weapons?
The core survival cheats are Invincibility (PAINKILLER), Max Health and Armor (TURTLE), and Weapons and Ammo (TOOLUP).
| Cheat | PC console | Phone number |
|---|---|---|
| Invincibility (about five minutes) | PAINKILLER | 1-999-724-654-5537 |
| Max health and armor | TURTLE | 1-999-887-853 |
| Weapons and ammo | TOOLUP | 1-999-8665-87 |
| Explosive bullets | HIGHEX | 1-999-444-439 |
| Flaming bullets | INCENDIARY | 1-999-462-363-4279 |
| Explosive melee attacks | HOTHANDS | 1-999-4684-2637 |
| Slow-motion aiming | DEADEYE | 1-999-332-3393 |
| Recharge special ability | POWERUP | 1-999-769-3787 |
Slow-motion aiming is the most useful one in a fight. It lets you line up shots during a chaotic police chase. Explosive bullets and flaming bullets are fun, but they raise your wanted level quickly.
How do you change your wanted level?
Use FUGITIVE to raise it by one star and LAWYERUP to clear it.
| Cheat | PC console | Phone number |
|---|---|---|
| Raise wanted level | FUGITIVE | 1-999-3844-8483 |
| Lower wanted level | LAWYERUP | 1-999-5299-3787 |
Lowering the wanted level is the one I’d keep handy at all times. It ends a police chase you’ve lost control of without costing you a mission attempt.
What are the GTA 5 vehicle cheat codes?
Vehicle cheats spawn a car, bike, plane or helicopter next to your character.
| Vehicle | PC console | Phone number |
|---|---|---|
| Buzzard (attack helicopter) | BUZZOFF | 1-999-289-9633 |
| Comet (sports car) | COMET | 1-999-266-38 |
| Sanchez (dirt bike) | OFFROAD | 1-999-633-7623 |
| Limo | VINEWOOD | 1-999-846-39663 |
| BMX | BANDIT | 1-999-226-348 |
| Stunt Plane | BARNSTORM | 1-999-227-678-676 |
| Rapid GT | RAPIDGT | 1-999-727-4348 |
| Trashmaster | TRASHED | 1-999-872-7433 |
The Buzzard comes armed, so it can also work as an escape tool. If you only want a fast ride for story missions, the Comet or Rapid GT is the easier choice.
What are the gameplay and ability cheats?
These cheats change how your character moves and how the world behaves.
| Effect | PC console | Phone number |
|---|---|---|
| Super jump | HOPTOIT | 1-999-467-86-48 |
| Fast run | CATCHME | 1-999-228-8463 |
| Fast swim | GOTGILLS | 1-999-468-44557 |
| Skyfall | SKYFALL | 1-999-759-3255 |
| Parachute | SKYDIVE | 1-999-759-3483 |
| Slow motion (world) | SLOWMO | 1-999-756-966 |
| Moon gravity | FLOATER | 1-999-356-2837 |
| Slippery cars | SNOWDAY | 1-999-766-9329 |
| Change weather | MAKEITRAIN | 1-999-625-348-7246 |
| Drunk mode | LIQUOR | 1-999-547-867 |
Skyfall is the standout. It launches you into the air, and you’ll want a parachute ready for the landing. Combining super jump with moon gravity is the quickest way to cross the map for sightseeing. Change weather cycles through conditions each time you enter it.
What are the controller cheat codes for PlayStation and Xbox?
Controller cheats follow a fixed button sequence. The Xbox buttons map directly onto PlayStation ones.
The mapping is X = A, Square = X, Triangle = Y, Circle = B, L1/R1 = LB/RB, and L2/R2 = LT/RT. These sequences were cross-checked against published lists from Digital Trends and Destructoid:
| Cheat | PlayStation | Xbox |
|---|---|---|
| Invincibility | Right, X, Right, Left, Right, R1, Right, Left, X, Triangle | Right, A, Right, Left, Right, RB, Right, Left, A, Y |
| Slow-motion aiming | Square, L2, R1, Triangle, Left, Square, L2, Right, X | X, LT, RB, Y, Left, X, LT, Right, A |
| Fast run | Triangle, Left, Right, Right, L2, L1, Square | Y, Left, Right, Right, LT, LB, X |
| Super jump | Left, Left, Triangle, Triangle, Right, Right, Left, Right, Square, R1, R2 | Left, Left, Y, Y, Right, Right, Left, Right, X, RB, RT |
| Fast swim | Left, Left, L1, Right, Right, R2, Left, L2, Right | Left, Left, LB, Right, Right, RT, Left, LT, Right |
| Explosive melee | Right, Left, X, Triangle, R1, Circle, Circle, Circle, L2 | Right, Left, A, Y, RB, B, B, B, LT |
| Drunk mode | Triangle, Right, Right, Left, Right, Square, Circle, Left | Y, Right, Right, Left, Right, X, B, Left |
| Change weather | R2, X, L1, L1, L2, L2, L2, Square | RT, A, LB, LB, LT, LT, LT, X |
| Slippery cars | Triangle, R1, R1, Left, R1, L1, R2, L1 | Y, RB, RB, Left, RB, LB, RT, LB |
For anything not listed here, use the phone numbers. They’re identical on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. PS3 and Xbox 360 players are limited to button sequences.
Is there a money cheat in GTA 5?
No. There is no working money cheat in GTA 5 Story Mode.
Digital Trends is direct on this point: there is neither a money cheat nor a working money generator. Be cautious with any site or video claiming otherwise. In Story Mode, cash comes from missions, heists, robberies and playing the stock market, which Rockstar built around the story’s events. Third-party mods exist on PC, but they aren’t Rockstar-sanctioned, and you should never use them near GTA Online.
What is Director Mode, and is it a cheat?
Director Mode isn’t a cheat. It’s a creative tool for staging scenes with different characters, locations and effects.
It was designed for filming scenes inside the game. Several sources describe two ways in:
- Open the Interaction Menu (M on PC, View on Xbox, hold the touchpad on PS4) and select Director Mode.
- Go through the Rockstar Editor tab in the pause menu.
Pick an actor in the casting trailer, choose a location, and start filming. Some story characters become available only after you meet them in the main campaign. It can feel like the ultimate cheat because it lets you place nearly any character and effect without a single code.
What should you do when GTA 5 cheats don’t work?
Most failures come from a mistyped sequence, the wrong game mode, or an active mission that blocks the cheat.
Check these in order:
- Confirm you’re in Story Mode. Cheats are disabled in GTA Online.
- Use the phone method. It removes the timing and button errors that cause most failures.
- Re-check the number. The 1-999 prefix is required, and one digit off will either do nothing or trigger a different effect.
- On PC, open the console with ~. Type the word exactly and press Enter. Some keyboard layouts place the tilde key differently.
- Wait out mission restrictions. Certain scripted moments may block cheats until they finish.
- Reload the game. A restart clears odd states, such as problems after leaving Director Mode.
